Everyone who has spent much time on Salt Cay knows about Sallina Sally.

It is told that our lovable Salt Cay Salina Sally is often seen at night moving from the main salina on Salt Cay to the "blue hole" in the south creek or on rare occasions is seen crossing Victoria Street to reach the ocean from the salinas.

Is Salt Cay Salina Sally related to Nessie?

Many people have had encounters with Salt Cay Salina Sally, either while riding their bike or taking their golf cart home through the "middle ground", on their way to their accommodations in the South District of Salt Cay... some comical and others more serious.

New Years Eve (Olde Year's Night)

on Salt Cay this year was a cross between:

"One More Night" and "We are the Children."

The night stared with appetizers, scallops wrapped in bacon, then there was Beef Wellington or Salt Cay Red Snapper en papilotte, followed by homemade ice cream parfaits with fresh raspberries and strawberries.

And of course champagne!

There was singing and dancing.

And two new Zookeepers made it to the wall at Porter's Island Thyme on Salt Cay.

New Year's Day brings a Southern Good Luck Dinner. That features extra thick pork chops, black eyed peas, corn bread and Lolli's pineapple cole slaw.

Porter's Island Thyme on Salt Cay brought back the Children's Christmas Party from days of old. Those of us who are a little older will remember the fantastic Christmas Parties that Bryan Sheedy, the founder of modern tourism on Salt Cay, gave at Mt. Pleasant Guest House.

Humpback Whales: First of the Season

Crystal Seas Adventures-Salt Cay spotted some of the first humpback whales of the season. These magnificent creatures migrate through the waters of the Turks & Caicos.

First Humpback Whales of the Season!

Humpback whales are known for their magical songs, which travel for great distances through the world's oceans. These sequences of moans, howls, cries, and other noises are quite complex and often continue for hours on end. Scientists are studying these sounds to decipher their meaning. It is most likely that humpbacks sing to communicate with others and to attract potential mates.

These whales are found near coastlines, feeding on tiny shrimp-like krill, plankton, and small fish. Humpbacks migrate annually from summer feeding grounds near the poles to warmer winter breeding waters closer to the Equator. Mothers and their young swim close together, often touching one another with their flippers with what appear to be gestures of affection. Females nurse their calves for almost a year, though it takes far longer than that for a humpback whale to reach full adulthood. Calves do not stop growing until they are ten years old.

Humpbacks are powerful swimmers, and they use their massive tail fin, called a fluke, to propel themselves through the water and sometimes completely out of it. These whales, like others, regularly leap from the water, landing with a tremendous splash. Scientists aren't sure if this breaching behavior serves some purpose, such as cleaning pests from the whale's skin, or whether whales simply do it for fun.

Christmas Dinner is by reservations only on December 25 starting at 7 PM. Reservations must be made by December 18 for this annual event.

Salt Cay: Salt Cay Salina Sally - Encounter

It has been years since someone had an encounter with our famed, "Salt Cay Salina Sally."

During filming of the movie on Salt Cay last week "Sally" raised her head. Luckily the film crew swerved and didn't hit our lovable "Sally", but the golf cart that they were driving plunged into a hole.

Sometimes it is best not to run!

Only one of the film crew was "worse for wear" with a sprained ankle and scratches on her legs as she was seen fleeing our friendly "Sally" who probably just wanted to be in the movies.

The whole world is going "green!"

Recycling Center in Mindanao, Philippines.

Plastic is collected and shredded to be used in cement.

Recycling, renewable, and green are the buzzwords throughout the world. I have seen recycling put in practice on both a small and a large scale from a resort or community size project found at Six Senses Resorts throughout the world or on a larger scale like I saw in the Philippines where not only was organic waste composted, but old plastics were used in the manufacturing of concrete products.

Irene came and went!

Irene Came and Went But Left Her Mark.

Sustained winds were estimated at 100+mph. When she hit Salt Cay she was a strong Category II, if not a Category III Hurricane. She was between 180-200 miles across and when the wind blew it blew for a long time.

The Salt Cay Ferry fared well but Salt Cay Divers Big Boat wasn't as lucky.

Luckily there was no major damage. Lots of minor and cosmetic damage, but for the most part nothing to worry about.

When Irene passed TCU went right to work!

Power was connected to most of the island yesterday and it is anticipated that power will be restored to everyone by next week.

The community turned out to help us at Porter's Island Thyme.

What is really encouraging was how the community pulled together. Thanks goes to out everyone who helped find and connect the generator to Porter's Island Thyme so we did not have our frozen food at risk.

Power was restored at Porter's hours after the storm, then TCU had electricty to most of the isalnd hours later.

The operation will provide highly personalized scuba diving, snorkeling, whale watching, private charters, bird watching, and eco-friendly excursions on Salt Cay. This, coupled with trips to the neighboring islands and cays, as well as regularly scheduled diving trips to South Caicos and Grand Turk, make Crystal Seas Adventures… Salt Cay unique among the Turks and Caicos watersports operators and the preferred provider of aqua tourism on Salt Cay.

Mr. Tim Dunn will be responsible for the day to day operation of the business. Tim brings with him a wealth of experience in the diving and watersports business having worked for every dive operator in Grand Turk and Salt Cay over the past decade. Tim has led over twenty-five hundred dives in Grand Turk and Salt Cay and spent over 500 hours whale watching after training under one of the best Captains in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Everette Freites. Tim worked for Oasis Divers as a Dive Master and Boat Captain from 2004 until 2008 and has recently moved to Salt Cay to work on his family’s historic home, the White House.

What a Salt Cay Weekend!

It was a classic Salt Cay weekend!

It started with Bingo at Porter's Island Thyme, followed by Karaoke at Debbie's Coral Reef Bar & Grill and partying until the wee hours at Porter's.

This was the last Bingo game of the season and the new season will start in November.

Everyone is a little sadder today on Salt Cay as our Lolli heads back to Davao, Philippines, for her much needed vacation. It is a long trip over 36 hours to wing her way across the Pacific.

The christening of CASTAWAYS...on Salt Cay happened last night. The Conchshoes played on the beach.

Restoration of CASTAWAY...on Salt Cay!

Hurricane Ike severely damaged the old Units at Castaways.

They are being taken apart and the wood recycled and put to use on the new units at CASTAWAY.

The old boards are being used to construct walkways at the new units at CASTAWAY...on Salt Cay.

New walkways nearing completion.

Completion of the restoration of the CASTAWAY...on Salt Cay is ahead of schedule and we anticipate being able to confirm your booking as early as late May 2011.

Bingo + Community = Happy Children on Salt Cay

The Students, Teachers and Principal of Mary Robinson Primary School

Saturday Night Bingo at Porter's Island Thyme

resulted in a bunch of happy faces yesterday when the schools supplies purchased with the funds and donations raised during the games were delivered to the school.

Thanks to a number of island guests, just a few part-time residents and MANY, MANY Turks Islanders, Dominican, Haitian and St. Lucian residents of Salt Cay

the first $1000 raised from the weekly Bingo game allowed us to donate reading books,

electronic Leap Frog learning materials, printer ink, a case of copy paper, art supplies and

individual pouches of markers, crayons, scissors, pencils and glue for each of our 12 students.

If you happened to be walking by the Mary Robinson Primary School yesterday, you may have heard the cheers and shouts as the children saw each item emerge!

We have already raised another $1000 and the next delivery will include computers and printers for the school.

Here's one big THANK YOU from the children, the principal and teachers

There She Blows: Humpback Whales on Salt Cay

The humpback whales are being seen daily on Salt Cay.

Guests this week had a soft in water encounter with these magnificent creatures. The photo speaks for itself!

However on Salt Cay whale watching is not the only thing to do.

Go snorkeling, learn to scuba dive, beach comb, explore the historic buildings, bird watch, learn the latest dance step, go fishing, learn to conch, hangout with the people from the many different cultures who call Salt Cay home, or just relax.

"Salt Cay in Perspective," the interactive conferences held at Beaches in Providenciales was a resounding success! People from throughout the Turks & Caicos attended this very informative event.

The past, present, and future vision of Salt Cay was discussed

The book, SALT CAY IN PERSPECTIVE, was released at the conference and explains in detail the impact of development on Salt Cay. The book's chapters: Welcome to Salt Cay, White Gold, Environment, Sustainable Development, Social and Economic Impact and Six Senses Salt Cay outline the past, present and the future for Salt Cay.

Speakers from around the world discussed their vision for our special piece of paradise...Salt Cay. The total Development Plan was discussed in detail and attendees had the opportunity to discuss their specific concerns with the individuals personally.

Salt Cay in Perspective

The conference dual purpose was to raise funds for the continued restoration of Government House on Salt Cay. Over $9,000 was raised to assist in the restoration efforts.

Saturday night is Community Night on Salt Cay at Porter's Island Thyme. It starts with the BINGO game which is becoming well known throughout the Turks and Caicos. Not only is it fun, but money is being raised for the Mary Robinson School on Salt Cay.

Last week Shelley's famous Haitian griot was featured with fried plantains, peas and rice and picklees before BINGO.

What a party it was...for the Grand Opening of "Zen Sky" at Porter's Island Thyme on Salt Cay. "Zen Sky" was aptly named by Salt Cay Cindi who suggested the winning name.

The latest "EVENT" is BINGO on Saturday night and for the second week in a row it was standing room only for this community EVENT that helps support Mary Robinson's Primary School. Not to mention Wing Night on Wednesday and Pizza night on Friday, all at Porter's Island Thyme.

The games start every Saturday night at 8 PM sharp and we recommend getting to Porter's early if you want a seat. Join us on Salt Cay for BINGO and a chance to win!

Christmas Eve on Salt Cay was Filipino/St. Lucien Style!

Food, fun and friends! Lolli and Cazie hosted a Filipino/St. Lucien Style Christmas Eve Party this year on Salt Cay! In between cooking and hosting at Porter's Island Thyme, Lolli cooked and baked at her house, too, so that the long table was filled with delicious treats...lumpia, fried chicken, bbq pork on a stick, oodles of noodles, pancet canton, pork balls and sweet rice...all of it yummy!

Then, Sharon came bearing gifts of chocolate chip cookies and homemade Baileys...another yum!

There were families and couples and singles...with everyone dining and dancing and enjoying the music and camaradirie.

It was a chilly night on the island, so most of us were bundled up against the cool air---even though the dancing kept us warmed up.

I was even able to catch a few couples enjoying the slower numbers!

You just can't help but have fun when you're surrounded by good people, delicious food, great music and happiness! No worries...hacuna mattata...enjoy and Happy Holidays!

Merry, Merry Christmas, Island Style from Salt Cay!!

What a wonderful way to bring in the holiday.

Carolyn Dickenson, our District Commissioner and her team of EMS workers spent the day decorating and setting the stage.

Others were busy in their kitchens cooking up an island feast. Then, it all came together in the early evening in the Salt Shed.

The indoor tree, centered on the stage with decorations all around.

Ms. Dickenson welcomed everyone to the festivities and helped identify special guests who were visiting the island.

She led us in a couple of Christmas carols and then invited one of our elder citizens, Ms. Lilian Kennedy to do the honors.

A few minutes later the Salt Shed was darkened and the lights came on all around us!

Lights on the tree, lights on the stage and lights all around the room!

~ Then, she asked some of our youngest citizens to come outside and light the wreath and outdoor decorations.

YES, it's beginning to feel a LOT like Christmas on Salt Cay!!

Mr. Poley Dickenson, sharing his good wishes with friends and family.

With a lovely graciousness, Ms. Dickenson invited some of the residents to share in the Christmas feeling and speak to the gathering.

There was much good will and laughter while stories were told and good wishes were shared. Many residents and guests enjoyed the delicious meal and companionship.

Christmas carols were sung throughout the event and some even enjoyed the karaoke machine, donated for the evening by our very own Lolli.

Roads: Salt Cay

Mrs. Carolyn Dickenson, our District Commissioner on Salt Cay, reports we have received donations for more than half of the material required to complete the resurfacing of our roads.

The government is providing labour and machinery to get the job done.

Mrs. Dickenson indicates that more donations are needed to complete this important upgrading of our infrastructure. She hopes that all residents, both full and part time, will make contributions to this important project that effects us.
